Locals to be hit as BMRCL to seal borewells

BENGALURU: Residents depending on borewells and open wells along Namma Metro’s Dairy Circle and Nagawara underground segment would possibly quickly have to brace for water shortage.

With work being taken up on the city’s longest tunnel corridor, between Dairy Circle and Nagawara (14km), the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is planning to seal borewells and open wells where the alignment passes below residential spaces.

The 14km underground segment with 12 stations — Dairy Circle, Mico Layout, Langford Town, Vellara Junction, MG Road, Shivajinagar, Cantonment, Pottery Town, Tannery Road, Venkateshapura, Arabic College and Nagawara — is expected to be operational by means of 2024.

The closure of borewells along the alignment of tunnelling is prone to impact 1000's of residents, specifically throughout summer. Also, no new borewells can be allowed along the direction.

“We have to seal borewells and open wells since the pressure exerted by means of the tunnel uninteresting system will lead to foam used for construction spurting out of the borewell on to the bottom,” explained a senior BMRCL reliable, including that Metro tunnels are constructed 12-18 metres below the bottom.

The affected residents can be compensated: borewells can be drilled in close by spaces. Usually, BMRCL carries out a survey prior to underground tunnelling work however in some circumstances, residents aren’t conscious about the borewells. BMRCL managing director Ajay Seth was unavailable for feedback.

While tunnelling the underground segment of Metro’s Phase 1 in 2009, BMRCL had issued a round to seal all borewells and open wells situated in places like Cubbon Park, Raj Bhavan, GPO, Vidhana Soudha and close to KR Circle along a 100-metre radius of the alignment. In Chickpet by myself, the corporation had closed 47 borewells prior to the work began.

Safe passage: For users of Byappanahalli Metro station, the look forward to a secure pedestrian crossing will quickly be over as the foot overbridge above Old Madras Road is nearing finishing touch. IdealNews had carried a file, ‘At Majestic & Byappanahalli, walkers chance existence to get admission to Metro stations’, on February 21. The BBMP is also development an FOB throughout Gubbi Thotadappa Road in front of Majestic (interchange) Metro station

Officials, on the other hand, declare tunnelling work gained’t have any impact on groundwater within the locality and gained’t purpose any environmental problems in future.

Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) has bagged the soft for two underground packages, Vellara Junction to Shivajinagar and Shivajinagar to Pottery Town, and work is expected to start in 3 to six months. However, BMRCL is but to finalise tenders for Dairy Circle-Vellara Junction and Tannery Road-Nagawara.
