I have started preparing for other exams in the meantime. I have not taken any other job because we were told that the call letters for training would be issued once the first batch returns. The first batch returned in December last year but we have still not been informed of the training schedule."

The candidates declare that their demand for a date or month when coaching will probably be scheduled has fallen on deaf ears. "We have no clue whether we need to prepare for training or look for another job," they stated.

Kriss Jasani (28), a resident of Junagadh, handed the psychometric check undertaken in May 2018 and awaits his coaching name.

"I contacted GMRC officials several times. On one occasion, I also visited them in Gandhinagar but they asked me to wait for their SMS and e-mail," he stated.

Jasani was running below contract with GTU in Ahmedabad on a monthly pay of Rs 13,000. However, when he were given shortlisted for GMRC, he quit his task. "I have been sitting at home for a while now, waiting for the letter. My parents have also started asking me questions about my job. I will wait till elections are over and then probably look at something else to do."

A Rajkot resident who was shortlisted, in the hunt for anonymity, stated, "If I take any other job, they may ask me to sign a bond. If I get a call letter from GMRC after joining, I will not be able to pay the bond owing to my financial condition. I am 24 years old and it is really embarrassing to be sitting idle at home."

Candidates visited GMRC office several occasions to hunt a rationalization declare they received no correct reaction . "Most of us feel scared to enter our names in the register there, fearing our training letters may be held back because we questioned them about it," stated a shortlisted candidate from Ahmedabad, refusing to be named.

When contacted, GMRC Managing Director I P Gautam stated, "Currently, we have two trains in Ahmedabad. In the next six months, we will have six trains, for which we have 60 drivers. The 60 applicants sent for training last year were shortlisted on the basis of their merit, and keeping in view the number of trains and operations in the initial stage. We cannot call everyone together for training and start paying them salary without having the supporting number of trains. Although their employment is guaranteed, we will call them when the need arises."
