Power disruptions may hit flights ops in Surat

SURAT: As the collection of flights from Surat has greater exponentially in the previous couple of months, the airport has started dealing with common power disruptions thereby inflicting hassle for the airline corporations in the case of protection of the aircrafts and the passengers.
The electricity at Surat airport is provided through Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited (DGVCL). Earlier, the power consumption on the airport was much less because of the operation of 1 or two flights in a day. However, the power consumption has greater three-fold with the operation of 27 flights in a day and building up within the passenger visitors from 20,000 to more than 1.45 lakh.

The current diesel generator sets (DG) set put in on the airport aren't sufficient sufficient to cater to the electricity wishes all over the power failure.

Recently, there have been couple of incidents of power failure on the airport that disrupted the flight products and services. Though the airport has emergency power supply device if the power grid fails, the prevailing DG sets put in also are now not sufficient to cater need of power requirement. This leads to blackout at many puts, placing even the passengers in hassle.

There was an incident in 2014 when Alliance Air flight landed at Surat at late night time and just on the time of complete halt the runway lighting fixtures went off. The power was restored through AAI generator, however it took numerous time.

The scenario at Surat airport has changed after the commencement of the direct global flight between Surat and Sharjah. Now, the airport is buzzing right through the day or even on the night time when the flight from Sharjah lands on the airport on the morning time.

“Now we have now lot many operations after dark and before morning time. What if runway lighting fixtures cross off just when the airplane is touching down? In case of accident, who will take the duty,?” said airport activist Rajesh Modi, who has despatched many representations to AAI relating to power supply issue on the airport.

Even the airways working at Surat airport have taken up the matter strongly with AAI, but there is no answer in sight.

Since 2006 so far, the Gujarat govt has borne Rs 16 crore payment because of MoU for supplying free electricity to airport , with a situation that such facility will cease as soon as airport will get developed.

In few days enlargement of terminal development may also start and as soon as completed, it's going to have thrice more space then current 8,000 squaremt. This will demand huge power requirement to illuminate infrastructure.

Sources within the DGVCL said that the AAI authorities had been steered to change the underground cable line to 66 KV overhead cable substation, but there is no response.
