Odisha govt urges MEA to rescue 42 labourers trapped in Dubai

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government Tuesday instructed the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to take rapid steps to rescue 42 labourers from the state who are allegedly trapped and being tortured by way of their employers in Dubai, officers said.

Responding to media stories, the state's home department instructed the joint secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs and the Protector General of Emigrants (PGE) to make rapid preparations to deliver the trapped labourers again to the rustic.

The PGE, underneath the Ministry of External Affairs, is the authority liable for protecting the interest of Indian workers out of the country.


According to media stories, about 40 labourers from Khallikote space of Ganjam district have allegedly been tortured by way of their employers, a development company in Dubai.


The labourers just lately called up their families and advised them about their plight following which the district government had been informed.


The state government has directed chief resident commissioner of Odisha, Sunil Bhargav, posted in Delhi, to coordinate with the MEA on the subject.


The home department has also requested the state labour and employment department secretary to get involved with the MEA, the chief resident commissioner of Odisha and the collector of Ganjam district to facilitate the duty.
