Balangir LS seat, with highest number of eligible voters, to go to polls on April 18

Bhubaneswar: The Balangir Lok Sabha constituency, comprising five meeting seats in Balangir district and two in Subarnapur, has the best possible number of eligible voters out of all of the 21 Parliamentary seats within the state. It has 17 lakh voters, while the Kandhamal Lok Sabha constituency has the bottom — 10.67 lakh.
The neighbouring western Odisha districts of Subarnapur and Balangir will move to the polls in the second one phase on April 18.

The Election Commission (EC) had set up 2,086 booths in Balangir LS seat in 2014 as a result of its measurement. This time, the number of booths has been diminished to 1,547 after explanation.

Several areas within the constituency are affected by the Maoist motion; hence, the EC has declared 256 booths ‘inclined’. Of them, 196 booths, positioned in strongholds of the Maoists, are ‘hypersensitive’. Six blocks of the district are believed to be rebel-hit. The population of those blocks is around 3.50 lakh, with nearly 2 lakh voters eligible to vote. Officials mentioned micro-observers would be deployed on the booths positioned within the Maoist-hit areas.

Officials mentioned the LS section’s Turekela, Khaprakhol, Patnagarh, Kantabanji, Bangomunda and Belpada blocks have essentially the most number of ‘hypersensitive’ booths. In 2011, a BJD leader, Raj Kishor Panda, who used to be the nominee of Balangir MP Kalikesh Singhdeo, used to be shot lifeless by the Maoists in his house in Telenpali village in Khaprakhol block. In 2012, BJP leader Ok V Singhdeo had received two risk calls from suspected rebels.

Balangir collector Arindam Dakua mentioned 11,140 polling body of workers would join ballot duty. “We will engage 321 girls body of workers within the polling procedure but their tasks will be limited to urban areas. Besides, 152 sector officers will be deployed for supervision,” he mentioned.

For election management, the administration has requisitioned 127 buses, seven vans, 100 auto-rickshaws and 30 bikes.
