Allahabad MP jolts BJP with SP ticket from Banda

LUCKNOW/ALLAHABAD: In a major blow to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), its sitting MP from Allahabad, Shyama Charan Gupta on Saturday joined Samajwadi Party (SP), days after the Yogi Adityanath govt had introduced the town on global tourism map with multicrore Kumbh festival.

Gupta could be contesting election from his home turf Banda on SP price tag.

Sources in BJP mentioned they had been expecting this as the party is mulling to deliver its former three-time Allahabad MP Murli Manohar Joshi back to his seat. Joshi is sitting MP from Kanpur.

“I had at all times been a dedicated worker of the party. I opted to depart the party and join Akhilesh for construction of UP and will likely be contesting from Banda,” mentioned Gupta.

Gupta, a business baron who has interests as diverse as beedi, hospitality and ancillary gadgets, was once also in talks with Congress. His tryst with SP isn't new as he had contested 1999 Lok Sabha elections from Banda at the party price tag but had misplaced to Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate. He, gained once more from Banda in 2004, but misplaced in 2009.

Gupta has been a distinguished Baniya chief in jap Uttar Pradesh and his win towards SP’s Rewati Raman Singh in 2014 on BJP price tag was once seen as a large boost for the saffron party within the holy town.

However, his fortunes in BJP ran into rough weather after party started grooming local leaders hailing from Allahabad like Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Sidarth Nath Singh and Nand Gopal Nandi, all of whom turned into cabinet ministers within the state.
