Sabarimala temple opens today, curbs may continue

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An incident-free pilgrimage is what police and Travancore devaswom board (TDB) are hoping for when Sabarimala temple opens for Kumbha masa puja on Tuesday evening for five days. The temple is being opened amid experiences that there could be serious tension as a couple of ladies are on the point of trek the hill shrine.
Meanwhile, expecting irritating scenario, Pathanamthitta district police superintendent T Narayanan has asked the district collector to impose Section 144 at Nilackal, Pamba and Sannidhanam from Tuesday evening till February 17 evening. Police have made elaborate arrangements to verify safety at Nilackal, Pamba and Sannidhanam.




Police have made up our minds to permit the media and devotees to shuttle from Nilackal to Pamba from 10am on Tuesday. Tanthri Kadararu Rajeevaru and head priest V N Vasudevan Namboothiri will open the temple at 5pm. The temple will close after the five-day puja at 10pm on February 17. The temple can be reopened on March 12 for the once a year competition, which is able to conclude on March 21.

With the Supreme Court booking its verdict on the assessment petitions on Sabarimala ladies entry verdict, police are expecting irritating scenario since there are experiences that there can be attempt to exploit the situation for political features. Since quite a lot of organizations had been protesting in Sabarimala ever since the SC accepted entry for women of all ages to the hill shrine, police will put into effect reasonable restrictions for all from Nilackal.


SP (special cell), police headquarters, V Ajith can be in charge of Sannidhanam all the way through the five days. SP (telecommunications) H Manjunath can be in charge of Pamba, while Kollam district police chief (city) P K Madhu can be in rate at Nilackal. As many as 350 policemen each can be deployed at Pamba, Sannidhanam and Nilackal, while 150 policemen can be deployed at Erumeli.


During the Makarvilakku competition season, two ladies — Kanakadurga and Bindu Ammini — had entered the hill shrine on January 2 with police protection.
