Leopard injures seven, triggers panic in densely populated Mundhwa

PUNE: A five-year-old female leopard strayed into the closely populated Keshavnagar house of Mundhwa on Monday morning, injuring seven people and sending citizens in panic mode in a four-hour drama from 6.30am to 10.30am. The large cat used to be in spite of everything tranquilised and brought to the Katraj animal rescue centre.

The leopard, while looking to hide, made unexpected assaults on people at Bhoi vasti, a gated housing society, Vertical Orina, and an under-construction building within the house.

It first attacked a 75-year-old girl, Samindra Taru, at Bhoi vasti, before injuring two labourers and the protection guard of the under-construction building. Later, when attempts had been being made to nab it, the leopard attacked a wooded area guard, a policeman and an employee of the rescue centre.

Forest officers suspect that the leopard will have come from the sugarcane fields in Shirur or Daund in search of prey or to flee the heat within the jungle.

Senior inspector Anil Patrudkar of the Mundhwa police station said his group rushed to Vertical Orina after receiving information about the leopard assault. “We cordoned off the housing society and controlled the gang of over 1,000 citizens which had gathered there. We assisted the fireplace brigade and wooded area department officers in trapping the animal.”

Taru, who used to be the primary to be attacked, advised IdealNews that she used to be searching for her dog while sporting a bucket of water to Bhoi vasti when the leopard darted out of a lane and pounced on her. “It hit me on the face and head. Range wooded area officer Vishnu Gaikwad advised TOI, “We searched for the leopard within the 14-storied building of Vertical Orina however realised it used to be within the duct.
