MYSURU: Undertaking main infrastructure projects in Kodagu district is inadvisable as even small disturbances may well be catastrophic, says a contemporary IISc file, recalling the flood and landslide disaster remaining 12 months.
The file, ‘Environment have an effect on evaluation of the proposed linear projects in Kodagu district’, warns state and central governments in opposition to interfering with the intrinsically fragile system of steep slopes and sharp gradients while raising an alarm about unregulated tourism growing ecological and environmental imbalance in Kodagu. The woodland space within the district, it says, is shrinking.

The file – via IISc scientists Ramachandra TV, Bharath Setturu, Vinay S, Vishnu D Mukri and GR Rao – is a part of the Sahyadri Conservation Series and prepared via the Energy and Wetlands Research Group (CES-TE 15) of the Center for Ecological Sciences of IISc, Bengaluru.

The 264-page file discusses in detail eight upcoming projects, including widening of Bengaluru-Bantwal road, and laying roads between Halebeedu-Kutta, Madikeri-Channarayapatna and Mysuru-Thalassery railway line.

The scientists say the ecological penalties of road enlargement and rail community plans could be immense and adverse. Irrational land-use adjustments will lead to a deficient hydrologic regime, with the catchment shedding the power to retain water, leading to “floods and droughts (because it took place right through the second one week of August 2018), landslides and mudslides leading to lack of lifestyles and assets”, it warns. The penalties could be conversion of perennial streams into seasonal ones and water scarcity right through non-monsoon seasons. People may just lose livelihood because of lower productiveness, human-animal conflicts might worsen and the water deficit may just result in intra and interstate social conflicts, the file says.

The scientists beneficial the state and central governments to not absorb any main road or rail venture as 90% of the district is ecologically delicate. The file additionally instructed that the governments disallow monoculture of unique species, even in espresso plantations, and incentivise growing of local species in espresso plantations.

The file says the district had 32% of woodland quilt beneath interior or intact forests in 1973, whereas in 2018 it covers most effective 19% – a transformation on account of irreversible land use adjustments over four a long time.
