Birdwatchers compete to spot the most number of species

Coimbatore: Birdwatchers from the town on Sunday picked up their binoculars and cameras to participate in a race to identify as many birds as imaginable in the day.

Organized by the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) and Salim Ali Naturalist Forum (SANF), the development titled Coimbatore Bird Race saw both skilled and budding birdwatchers recognizing and identifying birds to report as many species as imaginable. The dawn-to-dusk tournament was once followed by a get-together in the night time, the place the individuals interacted with skilled birders in the town.


A total of 25 teams from the town and surrounding areas participated in the race, which started at 6am. By 12 midday many teams had crossed the 100-mark in identifying chook species. Together, the teams recognized more than 200 species, stated a release by the organizers.
