1,200 volunteers to be engaged in bird rescue

SURAT: When thousands of Surtis are engrossed in flying kites, there are many who have fun the competition by saving lives of birds and animals injured by the fatal manja. Around 1,200 volunteers related to other NGOs will remain on toes for the rescue paintings for two days of Uttarayan.

In all, 10 rescue and rehabilitation centres were set up by various organizations in coordination with wooded area division in numerous areas of town. The rescue paintings which was achieved by other NGOs in past is now being carried out beneath Karuna Abhiyan of state govt. In the rescue centres, the injured birds will be given remedy in order that they change into are compatible to fly again. The handled birds will be saved in shelter for few days after remedy.


On Sunday, the NGOs already began receiving rescue calls. At the keep an eye on room set up by wooded area division, 86 calls had been won on a single day. In those instances, 36 birds had injuries. “One owl that has suffered serious bone injury in the wing was operated by a veterinary surgeon. A modern pining and wiring surgery was achieved to avoid wasting the owl,” said Darshan Desai of Prayas.


Five veterinary ambulance can also be made to be had for chook rescue and citizens can call the ambulance by dialling 1962. For chook rescue, a toll-free helpline on 7227023123 has also been set up by wooded area division. A keep an eye on room has been set up at Dayalji Baug.


“Last year, the workforce of NGOs and volunteers rescued 1,356 birds in 10 days all the way through Uttarayan. Forest division is facilitating and coordinating the rescue paintings achieved by many groups,” said Puneet Nayyar, deputy conservator of wooded area (DCF).
