New avenues


Zirakpur municipal council is making plans to revisit outdated garbage disposal system wherein garbage will be dumped in pits — a procedure that villagers have been following previous. For this, the council has shortlisted 4 residential societies, which can initiate the method of their respective spaces starting mid-December. The council may be making plans to make Zirakpur a plastic-free the city.


“The pilot undertaking will get started in one society each and every in Baltana, VIP highway, Dhakoli and Prabhat. These societies will dig pits of their respective premises. The pits will then be used to dump waste. The societies will have to care for the pits on their own,” said Rajinder Singh sanitary inspector.


As per Zirakpur municipal council data, one fourmember circle of relatives produces 700 to 800 grammes of garbage daily. Of this, 60% is kitchen waste. “Residents will be directed to segregate dry waster from rainy, which then will be accumulated through our sanitation staff and disposed in the pits,” Singh said.
