UoM extends deadline for distance education courses again

Mysuru: Tepid reaction from students to the 11 distance schooling lessons that the University of Mysore (UoM) is offering from the next instructional year has brought about the college administration to increase the final date for packages to December 31. In its revised calendar of events, UoM has announced that the final date for making use of to its correspondence programmes is now December 31.

UoM re-launched distance schooling lessons after a two-decade hiatus. Although the University Grants Commission (UGC) gave UoM the nod to launch 17 programmes, the college determined to restrict the number of lessons to 11 for the 2019-20 instructional year. Although October 20 was once the final date for filing packages, poor reaction has seen the cut-off date for submission of packages being extended two times.

Sources in the varsity mentioned that it might not be feasible to run the lessons if the number of students per programme did not touch at least 30 students. “If there are less than 30 students per course, it'll turn out to be unviable for the college to run those programmes,” the source added.

However, varsity officials have made it clear that there will probably be no adjustments made to the cost structure of the distance schooling programmes. Pointing out that the charges charged via UoM was once upper than what the Karnataka State Open college (KSOU) was once doing for those lessons, offering little incentive to the students to go for the college’s programmes. “Also, many personal universities are offering distance schooling programmes this year, with the reassurance of getting the students a role. These are some the issues that UoM is combating. Till 1996, the distance schooling lessons have been a golden goose for the college, but the scenario has altered drastically now,” mentioned a UoM respectable.

On the opposite hand, students believe that distance schooling programmes aren't in point of fact as attractive as they have been previous. “In general, the bachelor of arts (BA) lessons are the one who are in high call for. However, the poor task marketplace has ended in many students not preferring correspondence lessons. They want lessons that equip them with skills that industries are looking for,” mentioned Mukund Kumar, a BSc student in a city-based school.
