Tanker smuggling diesel to Punjab seized

MOHALI: The excise and taxation department's cellular wing chased and seized a tanker loaded with 2,500 litres of diesel - which was being smuggled into Punjab - on the dividing street of phases VII and VIII in Mohali on Thursday. Following the seizure, tanker driver Noor Mohammad and manager of a Chandigarh-based petrol pump Rahul Kumar have been arrested.

Assistant excise and taxation commissioner (AETC), cellular wing, Chandigarh, Shalin Walia mentioned, "Due to difference in petrol and diesel prices in Chandigarh and Punjab, there were complaints of fuel smuggling. Therefore, checks had been stepped up on roads to Punjab from Chandigarh. On a tip-off, a tanker (CH100-T-2472) was signaled to stop. But it tried to speed. It was chased for almost 2km and intercepted near YPS Chowk, Mohali."

The staff found the tanker was illegally transporting 2,500 litres of diesel to Punjab.

"Investigation found that it was loaded at M/s Chandigarh Petroways, Sector 52-B, and the fuel was to be supplied to M/s Kher Constructions, Chunni-Landran Road, Kharar, Mohali district. The tanker driver and the manager of the petrol pump were apprehended and booked at Mataur police station for violations of the Petroleum Act, Oil Company guidelines, Section 34 (1) of the Explosives Act 15 of 2003 and the Punjab VAT Act, 2005. Investigations to trace the kingpin of this racket and others involved is on," Walia added.

The accused published that this was an organized racket. "An invoice dated November 27 was also found in the possession of the driver. On this invoice, diesel was supplied earlier, too, to this as well as other clients in Punjab," Walia mentioned.

Mohali SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal mentioned, "A case has been registered. The driver and the manager of Chandigarh petrol pump have been arrested. We are in the process of naming the owner of the petrol pump in the FIR."

Nikhil Sood, HPCL manager, mentioned, "We have issued a show-cause notice to the petrol dealer in Chandigarh, demanding an explanation why his dealership must not be cancelled. He will be given a chance to explain his side after which further action will be taken. Notice was issued after the excise department apprised us of the issue."

The distinction in value of petrol and diesel in Chandigarh and Punjab makes smuggling winning. This hits income of Punjab, where prices are substantially prime.

On Thursday, prices of diesel and petrol in Chandigarh have been Rs 62.78/litre and Rs 67.77/litre. In Punjab the ones have been Rs 66.57/litre and Rs 77.14/litre, respectively.
