NHRC intervention sought into police firing death

GUWAHATI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday gained a grievance in the hunt for its intervention in the incident all the way through the primary section of panchayat polls where one Gyanendra Rajkhowa died in police firing. The incident took place on the Habial polling station in Golaghat on Wednesday.

A Delhi-based entrepreneur, Bhargav Bhushan Bhuyan, accommodation the grievance, prayed to the NHRC to issue stern directives to the state executive to mend responsibility of the death of Rajkhowa and take important action.

Bhuyan advised TOI, "It's not anything but a barbaric act on a part of the police, who're liable for public safety. It's inhuman and I prayed the fee to issue important instructions to the state executive.

The deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Partha Pratim Saikia, who used to be leading the police staff, must be suspended in an instant."


The deceased allegedly threatened voters with a scythe and tried to assault police. After reportedly failing to control him, police shot him. He later succumbed to his injuries.


Protests erupted thereafter in the district. On Thursday, numerous folks from Habialgaon house in Golaghat district blocked the busy Dergaon-Golaghat road at Ganakpukhuri house for about three hours, demanding the arrest of the DSP. The father of the deceased, Nagen Rajkhowa, has lodged a police grievance alleging inter alia that his son Gyanendra used to be a psychiatric patient and police killed him by way of firing from point-blank range.


"On receiving the complaint we have booked Saikia under section 302 (punishment for murder) of IPC," stated additional superintendent of police (Golaghat) Dhruba Borah. An investigating officer from outdoor the district has been asked to habits the investigation into the case.


While eyewitnesses alleged that police opened fireplace on Rajkhowa without making an attempt to catch him, police claimed that it used to be an act of 'self-defence'.
