MOSCOW: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu briefed Russian President Vladimir Putin on Israel's crackdown along its border with Lebanon on tunnels it mentioned had been dug through Hezbollah, the Kremlin mentioned on Saturday.

Netanyahu mentioned this week that the tunnels had been intended for use through Hezbollah opponents to infiltrate Israel from Lebanon and perform attacks. The Israeli army despatched mechanical diggers, troops and anti-tunneling apparatus to the border to shut them down.

During their telephone name, initiated through Netanyahu, "The President of Russia stressed the importance of ensuring stability in the region," the Kremlin commentary mentioned.
