Chidambaram delivers lesson in history to PM Modi

NEW DELHI: Former Union minister P Chidambaram delivered a lesson in history to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reminding him of Congress’ legacy and listing out names of the celebration’s previous presidents who did not belong to the Nehru-Gandhi circle of relatives.

Chidambaram was once responding to PM Modi’s barbs that Congress will have to get any individual outside the Nehru-Gandhi circle of relatives to guide the celebration. After listing out the names, the senior Congress leader also requested the prime minister to concentrate on extra relevant issues — the Rafale aircraft deal, unemployment, and farmer suicides in his tenure as PM.

In a sequence of tweets, Chidambaram indexed out the names of previous INC presidents who did not belong to the Nehru-Gandhi circle of relatives. Saying Congress was once pleased with the humble origins of its post-Independence leaders, Chidambaram said, “To jog PM Modi’s reminiscence: among the Congress Presidents since 1947 were Acharya Kripalani, Pattabhi Sitaramayya, Purushottamdas Tandon, U N Dhebar, Sanjiva Reddy, Sanjivaiah, Kamaraj, Nijalingappa, C Subramanian, Jagjivan Ram, Shankar Dayal Sharma, DK Barooah, Brahmananda Reddy, P V Narasimha Rao and Sitaram Kesri (sic),” he said.

In a dig at Modi, Chidambaram also said he was once thankful that the prime minister was once “concerned” about who's elected as Congress president and for devoting a large number of time speaking about it. Of the 60 presidents who have led Congress since its inception, six other people from the Nehru-Gandhi circle of relatives had been celebration president.

“Will he spend half the time and discuss demonetisation, GST, Rafale, CBI and the RBI? Will PM Modi discuss farmers’ suicides, huge unemployment, lynchings, rape crimes towards girls and kids, anti-Romeo squads, gau rakshak vigilantism and extending terror assaults?” Chidambaram said.

At the rally in Ambikapur in north Chhattisgarh, Modi had also attacked Congress president Rahul Gandhi and requested him to present an account at the contributions of the four generations of the Nehru-Gandhi circle of relatives to the country.

The former finance minister has also criticised the ruling government over its poor handling of the economy in addition to the general public sparring with the Reserve Bank of India.
