Tax raid on Raghav Bahl: Editors guild says motivated searches will undermine media freedom

NEW DELHI: The Editors Guild of India on Thursday expressed worry over the Income Tax department's searches at media baron Raghav Bahl's place of dwelling and administrative center, saying it believed that "motivated" I-T raids would severely undermine media freedom and the federal government must desist from such attempts.

A workforce of I-T sleuths raided the premises of the founding father of The Quint web page in Noida early morning, searching for paperwork and other evidence associated with a case of "bogus long-term capital gains (LTCG) received by various beneficiaries".

Bahl had shared his "great concern" with the Editors Guild of India after dozens of IT officials descended on his place of dwelling and The Quint's administrative center for a "survey".

The guild, in a statement, expressed worry over the hunt and survey performed by the I-T department.

Bahl is also a member of the Executive Committee of the guild and a founding father of the Network18 media workforce.

The guild mentioned it was once perturbed over Bahl's statement that he had to strongly advise the tax officials that they must not try and pick out up or see some other mail or file which is likely to comprise very severe and delicate journalistic subject material.

"If they do that, then we shall seek extremely strong recourse," Bahl has said.

"While the tax administration is within its rights to make inquiries in compliance with the relevant laws, it should not exercise those powers in a way that could be seen as an intimidation of the government's critics," the guild mentioned.

"The guild believes that motivated income-tax searches and surveys will seriously undermine media freedom and the government should desist from such attempts," it added.
