Smugglers to exploit border if no Brexit deal: UK watchdog

LONDON: Britain's National Audit Office says smugglers and different arranged criminals are prone to exploit gaps in border enforcement if the rustic leaves the European Union without an settlement as a result of important preparations might not be finished in time.


The watchdog says in a document revealed Wednesday that political uncertainty and delays in negotiations with the EU have hampered preparations, and the federal government is now racing to bolster computer methods, build up border staffing and build new infrastructure to track goods.


The workplace says 11 of 12 primary tasks might not be delivered on time or at "applicable high quality,'' with those who rely on the border ``paying the price.''


The document provides that ``arranged criminals and others usually are quick to take advantage of any perceived weaknesses or gaps within the enforcement regime.''
