SURAT: It was business as usual in Surat, a diamond hub and main textile production centre on the planet, when Hind-speaking migrants had been being attacked and threatened by miscreants in different portions of Gujarat after the rape of a 14-month outdated woman in Sabarkantha district allegedly by a native of Bihar on September 28.

Out of 55 lakh population in the city, it is estimated that over 60% of them have come from different portions of the country in search of better employment alternatives. The rape had prompted violence by locals in opposition to migrants which ended in exodus by other folks in hundreds to their hometowns in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. However, Surat maintained its calm and business endured unhindered as there was no incident of hate attack.

This was nothing new as a result of even in 2002 when riots had engulfed many portions of Gujarat, town remained an oasis of peace. Experts give credit score to current surroundings and the importance accorded to migrants for the development of city’s business and business.


“The city has maintained its distance from hate assaults on migrants since they shape the backbone of business and business. Not most effective workers, many employers too in the city occur to be migrants,” mentioned Kiran Desai, a researcher at Centre for Social Studies, who has studied migrant-related issues in the city.


“In 1992, migrant labourers had been utilized in riots by vested interests however since then all sections of society have realised the futility of violence. Local other folks have always authorised those who come from out of doors,” Desai added.



“So far, no incident of hate attack on migrants has been reported in the city. Police are protecting a close watch at the state of affairs. We had straight away addressed the issues wherever police intervention was required,” city police commissioner Satish Sharma informed TOI.
