Assam's Majuli island to have 1st Ro Ro service from Thursday

GUWAHATI: World's greatest river island Majuli on Brahmaputra is all set to take a bounce forward in transportation with the first ever Ro-Ro provider to be introduced in the island district on Thursday.

Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal will flag off the Ro-Ro provider between Kamalabari in Majuli and Neamati in Jorhat district, chopping down the circuitous road distance from 423 KM by way of Tezpur to 12.7 KM.

Majuli may be the assembly seat represented via Sonowal.

Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the state govt will collectively run the provider.

IWAI officials stated the new Ro Ro vessel MV Bhupen Hazarika with the measurement 46.5-metre in duration and13.Three-metre width has been procured at a cost of Rs nine.46 Crore for the new provider. The vessel has the sporting capability of 8 vehicles and 100 passengers.

Majuli has 144 villages with a population of over 1,50,000. Connectivity has been one of the biggest challenges to this flood-prone island, additionally the seat of Neo Vaishnavite culture founded via 15th century saint and social reformer Srimanta Sankardeva.

"IWAI is also planning to procure more such Ro-Ro vessels for use on Brahmaputra," an IWAI legitimate stated.

At present, there are 5 road bridges across river Brahmaputra - at Jogighopa, Guwahati, Tezpur and Sadiya for connectivity between southern and northern banks.

"In absence of adequate number of bridges, cargo and passenger movement takes through longer road routes leading to critical loss of time and money," the legitimate added.

IWAI had already started a Ro-Ro provider between Dhubri and Hatsingimari which decreased the travel distance via 190 KMs. A permanent Ro-Ro terminal was built at Dhubri.

"Floating terminals have also been constructed at 11 locations along the Brahmaputra waterway. These are at Hatsingimari, Dhubri, Jogighopa, Tezpur, Silghat, Biswanathghat, Neamati, Sengajan, Bogibeel, Dibrugarh and Oriumghat," the legitimate added.
