Manika Batra wants Dronacharya Award for Guru Sandeep Gupta

NEW DELHI: She may well be just 23, but Manika Batra has taken Indian Table Tennis to new heights and unparalleled firsts. But the coed in her won't be happy until her early life guru Sandeep Gupta receives the Dronacharya Award.

The historic four-medal spree at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (CWG), including the maiden ladies's singles gold, introduced Manika to the world. Four months later, she further stamped her authority with a mixed doubles bronze, partnering Achanta Sharath Kamal at the Asian Games.

Behind this successful run is years of exhausting work and the conviction of Gupta, who formed a champion paddler for India.

"Yes, I want that (Dronacharya Award) for him because he has worked so much with me and so many other players," said Manika whilst talking to TimesofIndia.com

"He is working hard for everyone and for me too. So he should get the award for that. He deserves that and I am sure he is going to get it," the CWG champion added.

When now not on India responsibility, Manika trains at the table tennis academy at the Hansraj Model School in Punjabi Bagh, New Delhi -- from where she did her education. Gupta is the head coach of the academy.


Under Gupta's mentoring, the academy has produced stars like Neha Aggarwal, Manika and Anthony Amalraj, who was also part of the gold and bronze medal-winning men's team at the 2018 CWG and Asiad, respectively.


Gupta frequently travels with Manika to global tournaments, and was also at the Asian Games in Indonesia as part of India's training group of workers. He had also travelled to Rio in 2016 when Manika made her Olympics debut.


This year's Dronacharya and Dhyanchand awardees shall be picked via an 11-member selection dedicated headed via Justice Mukul Mudgal. A gathering for the same is scheduled for September 16.


The National Sports Awards ceremony is normally hung on August 29 once a year to celebrate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, nevertheless it has been moved to September 25 this year since it was clashing with the Asian Games.
