Chinese Muslims protest plans to demolish mosque

BEIJING: Reports say hundreds of contributors of China's Muslim Hui ethnic minority have staged uncommon protests over plans to demolish a newly built mosque within the nation's northwest.

Hong Kong's South China Morning post mentioned a crowd gathered Thursday outdoor the towering Grand Mosque within the town of Weizhou within the Ningxia Hui independent region.

Authorities had deliberate to start the demolition Friday, although it wasn't immediately transparent if they'd continue in keeping with agenda.

The move comes as China's formally atheist ruling Communist Party is cracking down on religious expression and attacking what it calls radical ideas among the nation's more than 20 million Muslims.

Further west within the region of Xinjiang, hundreds of hundreds of contributors of the Uighur and Kazakh Muslim minorities were detained in re-education camps.
