Mumbai Haj House gets flagpole, makes a point

MUMBAI: The 18-storey Haj House close to CSMT station wears a brand new feather in its cap. It has transform the primary development in India to put in a 20 m tall flagpole on its terrace, the largest atop any construction in the nation. The tricolour that will be hoisted there measures a huge 20 toes x 30 toes.

A a success trial used to be undertaken on Monday after labourers had carried the heavy pole up the steps and put in it on a distinct platform. The inauguration will happen with pomp and ceremony inside two or three weeks.

Haj House is just about 200 toes in height and the pole 60 toes tall so the tricolour will fly 260 toes above flooring degree. Given its weight and span, it will be tough to hoist and lower the flag every morning and night, so the committee is looking for executive permission to stay it flying day and night time as monuments do. Special lights will be put in for higher visibility.

Maqsood Khan, CEO of the Haj Committee, mentioned, "I was inspired by a similar flag in Kalina University where I worked as registrar, and thought of replicating the effort at Haj House. We tested the strength of our structure that was built in 1985 and decided to implement the project."

Chairman Ebrahim Shaikh mentioned this used to be a watershed second for the community. "Haj House has elements of Islamic architecture, and all Hajis travel from here to Mecca Madina. This is a religious place with regular namaz. So this is an important statement."

The implementation used to be led through Rakesh Bakshi of the DK Flag Foundation who backed the flag and facilitated the tie-up with Bajaj Electricals which manufactured the pole. "This is the largest terrace flagpole in India," he mentioned.

The tricolour used to be fashioned through Gyan Shah whose Flag Company has stitched the largest flags in the nation. He mentioned, "It is made from polyester, which is best since the colour does not fade, and measures 20 ft x 30 ft. This is the same size as those along Bandra Worli Sea Link, JSW in Bandra-Kurla Complex and Mazgaon Docks."

Khan mentioned they have invited minority affairs minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, chairman of Haj Committee of India Chaudhry Mahboob Ali Khaisar and different committee members for the opening ceremony.
