'Sexual favours': TN college prof arrested, governor orders probe

MADURAI: Nirmala Devi, an assistant professor of Devanga Arts College at Aruppukkottai in Virudhunagar district, used to be arrested on Monday night time for allegedly trying to lure some girl students to do sexual favours for "higher officials" of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU).

Police staff who had stationed themselves outdoor Nirmala's area by noon forced themselves in round 7pm and took her into custody. The motion used to be taken in accordance with a grievance from faculty secretary R Ramasamy.

On a day of fast paced trends, governor Banwarilal Purohit, who could also be chancellor of MKU, ordered a high-level inquiry by retired IAS officer R Santhanam into the incident, hours after vice-chancellor P P Chellathurai introduced an inquiry by a five-member committee led by senate member Lellis Thivakar.

State fisheries minister D Jayakumar stated the federal government will act and "black sheep" will be removed, even as opposition events - the DMK, PMK and CPM - reacted strongly to the trends.

The controversy erupted on Sunday when an audio clip of Nirmala's conversation with the ladies went viral on social media. On March 21, two days after the ladies filed a grievance with the college control, Nirmala used to be placed under transient suspension
