Chinese manja slashed throat, stopped just short of windpipe

KOLKATA: The kite string — the nylon one, popularly referred to as Chinese manja, banned in Kolkata — that slashed the throat of Saikat Dutta, 45, whilst he used to be driving his bike on Maa flyover on Saturday stopped mere millimetres short of his windpipe. It could have been fatal had it penetrated deeper. Dutta underwent a three-hour surgical procedure and is recuperating.
“The string grazed past the windpipe. It had cut throughout the platysma muscle proper in the course of the throat. It could have been fatal if it had cut throughout the trachea,” said Dr Abhik Ghosh, ENT and head and neck surgeon at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals where Dutta used to be rushed to by a senior police inspector. “Also, the fact the affected person reached medical institution quickly helped,” he added.

This is the second such incident at the flyover previously 4 months, indicating the danger of Chinese manja on Maa flyover. In December, Class V scholar Jaymini Samanta used to be on her option to Eco Park when she suffered accidents and needed to be placed on ventilation for some time.

The police officer who rushed Dutta to medical institution said: “He did not see the string that possibly were given caught at the flyover after the kite were given freed off the spindle. He had deep cuts.”

“Even on Monday, I saw boys flying kites dangerously with reference to the flyover. Their Chinese manja may end up in more accidents. I knowledgeable a visitors sergeant about it but he flatly advised me that it did not fall underneath his purview,” alleged Abhishek Sengupta, a colleague of Dutta.

The police officers said they have got began a power in opposition to illegal alloy-coated kite string. “We had been getting reviews of these strings being noticed on Maa flyover. So we started searches in within reach areas to check out and find the ones selling those illegal Chinese-made manja. So some distance, now we have not been in a position to trace those who have hoarded them. We are actually looking for out if those are entering the Karaya-Park Circus belt outside our police station areas,” said DC (south east department) Kalyan Mukherjee.

According to resources, Chinese manja is imported from Surat, Hyderabad and Bengaluru and bought illegally in Tiljala, Maheshtala, Garia and at the outskirts. The police officers say kite-sellers in Samsul Huda Road and Suresh Saha Road, that are widespread among kite-makers, do not stock manja. “They imagine in the use of cat scat and what not, claiming shoppers favor them. We will never make something that can harm somebody,” claimed Khudabaksh, one of the sellers.

This isn't the first time that such an incident has took place in this house. Children (and adults) staying in structures that abut the flyover want to be sensitised about the perils bikers at the highway face as a result of their motion.
