Assam turns festive for Rongali Bihu

Guwahati, The other folks of Assam on Saturday began celebrating Rongali Bihu to mark the start of the Assamese New Year and the end of the harvesting season amidst conventional fervour and large-scale fanfare.
The first day of the week-long pageant was once celebrated as Goru Bihu (Cattle Bihu) around the state through which other folks took their farm animals to a nearby fishery or pond to present them a ceremonial tub and beat them with 'dighalati pat' -- leaf of a plant having medicinal worth -- to thrust back the flies and bugs from the animal's frame. They also recite some hymns praying for the great health of the animal.

The second day of the pageant, which falls at the first day of the new Assamese Calendar month of Bohag, which is on Sunday, is referred to as Manuh Bihu (Human Bihu). People take tub and put on new garments on this present day and sing and dance to experience.

Younger other folks consult with elders within the family and search their blessings. Elders give Bihuwan -- the traditional Assamese towel referred to as Gamocha -- and bless the more youthful ones for excellent health and prosperity.

Although the Bohag Bihu or Rongali Bihu is a week-long pageant, the birthday party continues for the entire of the month and past with other folks setting up other cultural programmes and purposes in numerous parts of the state.

Conveying his greetings, Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi mentioned: "Let this Bihu which marks the advent of Assamese New Year be a harbinger of a new dawn of warm and harmonious relationship and peace, prosperity and progress in the state."

The Governor expressed hope that the celebrations of Rongali Bihu support love and goodwill among all sections of the folks and beef up the bond of team spirit and bonhomie among them.

"Let this Rongali Bihu and the Assamese New Year be a reason for the people of Assam to take a pledge for a 'Swachh Bharat' and 'Swachh Assam'," he added.


Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also prolonged his Bihu needs to all sections of other folks.


"Assam is a land where people representing all caste, creed, and community live in absolute harmony. Since time immemorial people of all sections have been living in the state upholding the tenets of peace, prosperity and mutual co-existence," Sonowal mentioned including that Bihu is a pageant which constitutes the lifeline of the folks of Assam and the crux of the composite tradition of Assam.


The birthday party of Rogali Bihu and Assamese New Year besides reinforcing the age-old bond of team spirit and camaraderie among the other folks of Assam bring in a new morning time of peace and prosperity, he added.
