9/11 inspired from 'Star Wars: Atwood

Author Margaret Atwood has stated that she believes the 9/11 terrorists attacks may have been inspired from a plot point of the sci-fi vintage Star Wars.
Atwood’s dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale is enjoying a cultural resurgence as a TV adaptation has resonated strongly with feminist movements in the Donald Trump generation.

In an interview with Variety, the writer mentioned how an opera based on the novel that premiered in Denmark in 2000 had confirmed more than a few things blowing up, together with the Twin Towers.

Atwood, who was recognised as one of Variety’s Power of Women honorees, stated when the opera was staged again, they needed to take it out “as it was no longer sooner or later”. She asked the interviewer whether this gave him a creepy feeling and when he stated, “Yes, it does”, she responded, “They didn’t get that idea from my opera, don’t fear. They were given the speculation from Star Wars.

“Remember the first one? Two guys fly a airplane in the midst of one thing and blow that up? The most effective difference is, in Star Wars, they escape. Right after 9/11, they hired a host of Hollywood screenwriters to inform them how the tale would possibly cross subsequent. Sci-fi writers are superb at these things, anticipating long term events. They don’t all come true, but there are attention-grabbing ‘what if’ scenarios,” she added.

Talking about The Handmaid’s Tale, which is ready in a long term the place women don't have any rights and are used for their womb, Atwood stated she began writing the guide in West Berlin in 1984.

“The wall was nonetheless in place. Because I used to be Canadian, we could cross across to East Berlin, Czechoslovakia, and Poland, which we did. They have been all Iron Curtain nations on the time. That certainly had an influence at the guide, most particularly the sensation that people have been very reluctant to talk to you till they absolutely relied on you and you have been in a place that wasn’t bugged.

“I have been excited about this guide for some time. I have been gathering newspaper clippings, which one did in the ones days. There was no web. So my rule for it was, not anything is going in that didn’t have a precedent in actual lifestyles - someplace, sometime,” she stated.

Asked whether she was surprised by means of Trump’s win in the United States presidential race, the writer stated she was not.

“I’m too outdated to actually be surprised. Think of ways lengthy I’ve been on this planet. I’ve observed numerous regime adjustments in several nations. The individuals who have been devastated have been younger individuals who had never experienced the rest of the sort. And a few of them have been somewhat disappointed. But it’s not the end of the arena, although it’s beautiful bad for the environment,” she stated.
