Coimbatore: Members of Thandhai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK), in conjunction with other political and student outfits, on Wednesday staged a protest in opposition to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for allegedly including divisive ideas akin to varna gadget (caste gadget) within the syllabus.

A school had included an goal query within the Social Science paper asking Class VI CBSE students to pick out the bottom caste among the divisions in varna gadget, the protesters stated.

The options read brahmana, shudra, kshatriya and vanaprastha. A snapshot of the query paper has been posted in social media platforms, crating a furore.

Such questions would sow casteist ideas in students’ minds and inevitably create divisions amongst them, stated Ok Ramakrishnan of TPDK. “Class VI students would be round 12 years outdated. If they are asked in an exam to pick out the bottom caste among the divisions, they would sub-consciously imbibe the regressive idea of high and low caste. This might also result in students viewing their classmates in keeping with caste, thus creating divisions right in the study room level,” he stated.

Ramakrishnan stated the Union executive should direct CBSE to remove such ideas from textbooks. Members of Viduthalai Siruthaigal, SDPI and other outfits additionally participated within the protest.
