Election awareness programme to be conducted over water

Mangaluru: Walkathons to promote a cause at the moment are passé. Thanks to an initiative of the Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) Committee, Dakshina Kannada district is all set to witness the primary ever ‘Jalathon’ to provoke the fishermen group to return out and exercise their franchise in the imminent polls to the state assembly. A flotilla of boats will sail down the Phalguni river in a while, carrying the message— ‘Come to the polling station’.

Taking a cue from the geographic characteristics of this coastal district, where the sea and intertwining rivers are part of daily existence, the SVEEP committee headed by way of ZP CEO M R Ravi, has embarked at the idea of preserving a ‘Jalathon’. Jala by the way means water in Kannada. “We have many fishermen who reside along the banks of those rivers, or even at the shores abutting the sea,” Ravi mentioned.

“The date of this unique match, that may see a flotilla of fishing boats sail down the Phalguni with a message encouraging all stakeholders to cast their vote, will probably be fixed in a while,” Ravi mentioned. The committee is having a look at all imaginable avenues to reach out to each and every section of society, that is eligible to exercise its franchise. “We can have wittingly or in a different way lost sight of a couple of essential segments of voters in the past, and that is an attempt to duvet all bases,” he mentioned.

As in line with the plan formulated for the ‘Jalathon’, Ravi mentioned the Election Commission of India brand for the imminent elections will probably be equipped in the form of flags to boat house owners, with a request to them to fly the same on their fishing vessels. “This will create interest among other fishermen, to see a non-standard flag flutter at the bow of boats, and that is precisely what we're striving to reach with regards to growing all-round interest among stakeholders,” he mentioned.
