President Kovind intervenes to re-open paper mills

SILCHAR: Responding to a contemporary memorandum submitted through joint motion committee of known unions of Cachar Paper Mill and Nagaon Paper Mill owned through state-run Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited, the Presidential secretariat in a letter has asked the secretary to the dep. of public undertaking to do so in an instant to make sure the re-opening of those mills and transparent the dues of the employees.

The memorandum to President Ram Nath Kovind had said that the Cachar Paper Mill has remained closed since Oct 2015 and the Nagaon Paper Mill since March 2017, leaving no less than 2 lakh staff jobless and the agricultural economy of the state significantly affected.


The staff and workers had been disadvantaged of their salaries and statutory dues, the memorandum stated, adding that the Prime Minister had given his commitment to re-open those mills however the subject has remained unresolved as a result of lack of decision-making at the a part of the Union executive.


"The unions hope that since the government is duty-bound to honour the directive of Rastrapati Bhawan, it will act promptly to save the industries and the affected peoples who are on the brink of starvation due to non-payment of dues. They have also been compelled to seek permission from the President to commit suicide if the crisis is not resolve immediately," stated Manobendra Chakraborty, president of the INTUC-affiliated Cachar Paper Mill staff union on Saturday.
