Ola launches route learning exercise for its ambitious water taxi service

GUWAHATI: App-based taxi service, Ola on Wednesday launched the course studying workout for its bold water taxi service on the Brahmaputra river, the primary of a sort here. The company is prone to kick off the commercial service in a week's time.


The company proposes to utilize the Brahmaputra river channel, which may be a countrywide waterway that runs alongside the principle highway on its south bank. It plans to ferry other people from Guwahati airport, also located on the river bank downstream, to town overlaying a distance of about 15 km in 15 mins. The highway distance to the airport is greater than 10 km longer and taking into consideration the site visitors, it takes greater than an hour to hide the distance.


The company, which is India's leading ride-sharing company, signed a MoU with the state govt to pilot an app-based river taxi service in Guwahati all the way through the state's international traders' summit closing week. "Convenience and safety of the commuters are paramount to us. Our aim is to stand out as a reliable choice of transportation for the country. Our intent is reflected in all our partnerships with various state governments across transportation and tourism. As a part of this endeavour, we are delighted to partner and work with the Government of Assam to enhance and empower the local transportation infrastructure," Ola VP (operations) Vijay Ghadge mentioned.


Director of state inland water shipping division, Bharat Bhushan Dev Choudhury informed TOI that Ola's course studying began on Wednesday with a one-seater petrol vessel. "Once they finalise the route and the propose the fare to us, we will then proceed with the permission granting process, which would be in next seven to eight days." The company would quickly add two extra vessels with higher seating capacities. The IWT division will provide the terminal amenities on the pick-up and drop-off points.


The state govt also plans to start a scheme 'Jibon Dinga' to facilitate local youths with subsidies for starting water taxis across the state.
