Hold elections to gender panels, DU tells colleges

NEW DELHI: Delhi University proctor Neeta Sehgal on Thursday wrote to principals of all DU faculties to hold elections for the College Complaints Committee and Gender Sensitization Committee as consistent with the UGC laws.
The elections are slated for March 12 and faculties had been asked to get again to the proctor’s office with the names of the elected candidates through March 15.

The lack of a lawsuits committee was highlighted when a number of woman scholars needed to method the police and the school management to get their sexual harassment lawsuits filed, after the school management had both refused to behave on the topic or intimidated them with action.

While some faculties have elected participants, other faculty committees are both headed through participants of the school management or are defunct.

Last week, a student from Daulat Ram College had approached Delhi Police towards a professor who had been allegedly harassing and stalking her. She claimed that a number of scholars ahead of her had approached the management about the sexual harassment being meted out to them, but no action was taken.

A couple of days later, a student from Bharati College additionally wrote to the college management alleging that her professor has been harassing her and college management, as a substitute of taking action towards the professor, was intimidating her.

According to the letter written through Sehgal, it has come to the attention of the college management that the composition of the lawsuits committee has not been as consistent with the UGC guidelines in many colleges. “It is asked to behavior elections for the participants of the school lawsuits committee underneath the UGC law, 2015…,” the letter read.

The nominations for the elections must be filed through February 23 and the final record of nominated candidates will likely be declared on the February 27. The elections will take place on March 12, with the declaration of effects on the same day.
